Fit Columbia and Midlands Anchor honors local women in fitness with a monthly feature celebrating their contributions to our midlands community. These women are the best of the best in the health and wellness industry. These women are local small business owners, active in the community and have a minimum of five years experience.  Our July 2018 feature is  Erin Mills. Our feature is written by Fit Columbia’s Jenna Yacovone and Angie Sellers.

Erin Mills is the proud owner of the lively studio Jazzercise West Columbia Fitness Center. Jazzercise was the original dance party workout and today, 45 years later, it’s reinvented itself as a high-intensity dance- and strength-based fitness program. The workouts are fresh and challenging, featuring an up-beat playlist to get your heart pumping.   The mission of Jazzercise West Columbia is “to strengthen women through dance fitness so that the strength they gain in class may translate to everyday living, where life’s challenges can be faced head on.” This mission shines through Erin’s passion, where she continues to encourage, inspire, provide accountability, and motivate the women of her Jazzercise family.

Erin’s passion for Jazzercise is nothing new, in fact, she has been dancing her way through workouts since a young girl. She earned a B.S. in Exercise Science, worked in personal training, and physical therapy but struggled to find her true passion until she returned to Jazzercise. Erin allows Jazzercise to be a healthy outlet, where she could lose herself in the music and movement.

Erin’s classes fuse cardio, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, and modern dance. Unique to studios of its kind, Jazzercise West Columbia Fitness Center offers childcare, so workouts can be more accessible and available for mothers! Erin strives to support and encourage women of the community as they model for their little ones the importance of taking time to care for themselves physically and emotionally through exercise. Furthermore, Erin’s classes accompany all ages and fitness levels. Women in their early 20s through 70s are part of this Jazzercise family.

Q&A with Erin Mills!

What activities/hobbies do you enjoy in your leisure time?

I enjoy lifting weights and doing anything with my husband and kids.  I can’t wait to pick blueberries and go to the beach with them this summer!

What is a personal goal of yours?

A personal goal of mine is to love well. I want to love my husband, children, and the women around me better.  I know love is not something I can manufacture on my own, but rather something my faith produces in me.  And I know that part of being able to love others well means loving and accepting myself just as I am at any given moment.

What is your favorite healthy snack?

I like to mix cashews, walnuts, pecans, almonds, and raisins to eat as a healthy snack.  My husband calls it “bird food.” 🙂
What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is “Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers.  It reminds me of my need for a Redeemer.
