Congressman Joe Wilson Op-Ed: Looking Ahead to the New Year

As we mark the end of the calendar year, I wanted to take time to reflect on how far we’ve come and what House Republicans have achieved in 2016:

We put a bill on the President’s desk that repealed Obamacare—forcing him to defend his broken healthcare system. We provided meaningful reforms to the Department of Veterans Affairs, providing accountability to the care our veterans receive. I co-chaired the Congressional Art Competition, recognizing the incredible artistic talents of high school students from across the Second Congressional District and our country.

I held my annual August Bus Tour, traveling across the Second Congressional District and visiting with schools, businesses, and the community as part of my pledge to be accountable and accessible. House Republicans, led by Speaker Paul Davis Ryan, launched “A Better Way” – recommendations and reforms from constituents across the country to lead our nation forward. We passed legislation to hold Iran accountable for their intercontinental ballistic missile tests and to strengthen sanctions on aggressive, tyrannical regimes like North Korea.

It was a remarkable year where we made great strides towards conservative reforms to rein in a liberal, big-government agenda, but more work remains.

Each year, I present a legislative agenda across the district—my goals for the next year, tangible policy proposals to create jobs, reduce spending, enhance our cyber capabilities, and strengthen our military. In 2017, I’m going to work with my colleagues in Congress to repeal Obamacare, which has destroyed jobs and increased costs, and replace it with a patient-centered solution that provides affordable choices for families. I’m looking forward to eliminating burdensome government regulations that stifle small businesses and hamper job creation and pledge to work with local Chambers of Congress to bring meaningful jobs to South Carolina. I agree with the Donald Trump economic agenda: jobs, jobs, jobs!

Cybersecurity is another priority for 2017 —to work with the President-elect to strengthen our nation’s offensive and defensive cyber capabilities, coordinate an inter-agency response to cyberattacks, and to promote public-private partnerships to encourage cyber innovation. Each year, I also reaffirm my commitment to advocate for our troops, veterans, and military families by promoting peace through strength and reversing defense sequestration. I encourage you to learn more about my 2017 Legislative Agenda by visiting my website: www.joewilson.house.gov.

I’m excited for what the New Year will bring. The American people have placed great trust in me, as your Member of Congress, in your Republican President-elect, Mr. Donald Trump, to deliver on our conservative goals.

As we enter 2017, here is my promise to you: I will continue to be accessible and accountable. I will continue to stand up for our shared conservative values. I will continue to fight for you in Washington. Together, we can deliver the conservative vision of limited government and expanded freedom in the new Congress.
