Lexington High School’s Students In Action team recently won a regional community service award for putting others ahead of themselves.

LHS received the Most Outstanding Team award for the Midlands region from the Jefferson Awards Foundation. Students In Action members focused all year on serving people in three groups — new students to LHS; military families and deployed soldiers from Lexington; and cancer patients and families in Lexington.

Students In Action is a nationwide program that strives to develop high school students into community leaders. The LHS team currently has 19 core officers and 32 extended members.

After submitting a written portfolio of their work, students gave an 8-minute presentation to a panel of judges and completed a rigorous question-and-answer session. Their combined score on the written portfolio and the presentation made them a state semifinalist representing the Midlands. Though LHS did not win at the state level, they did receive a gold-level banner.
