Hundreds of people will gather Saturday at Saluda Shoals Park for the third annual Sweet Baby O 5K.
The fundraising race, formally called the Owen Walker Caldwell Memorial 5K, was organized by Owen Caldwell’s family after he died unexpectedly in his sleep in 2013 at the age of 14 months.
Proceeds from the event benefit Hands of Hope South Carolina, a pediatric hospice and palliative care nonprofit that serves children and families statewide. The Sweet Baby O 5K has raised more than $13,000 for Hands of Hope since its inception.
Held the first Saturday in August, the race is not only a way to remember Owen’s life and continue his legacy with a charitable gift, but also a community celebration of his birthday, which is August 8. This year would have been his fourth.
The event is designed with families in mind, and strollers, wagons and kids are always part of the race. A Family Fun Zone offers facepainting, special treats and other activities for the kids. Pelican’s SnoBalls will be on site for the first time this year, also donating a portion of their proceeds to Hands of Hope.
Registration is open online through Thursday and in person (by cash or check only) on race day.
