In an extravaganza that honors some of the area’s most serious artists and some other very serious artists doing very silly things, The Jasper Project presents the 2016 JAY Awards Ceremony and Holiday Lip Sync Battle.
Come early on Monday, December 5th to the Market Space at 701 Whaley where you’ll be greeted by several of Santa’s misfit elves, a cash bar, and hundreds of homemade Christmas cookies. Doors open at 6 and, at 7 pm, the Jasper Artists of the Year in Theatre, Music, Literary and Visual Arts will be awarded.
At 7:30, the silliness starts as a dozen local artists and arts leaders take to the stage to perform their lip-synced renditions of some of our favorite artist-specific Christmas carols.
Throughout the night, there will be a silent auction of original Christmas ornaments created by local artists, a photo booth where you can have your photo taken with Santa’s disgruntled brother, Bob Claus, a cash bar presented by the Whig, and be able to purchase tokens with which you’ll cast your vote ($1 per vote) for the People’s Choice award in the Holiday Lip Sync Battle. Food truck service will be available for those with appetites. Tickets are $10 and available via Brown Paper Tickets at
The 2016 Jasper Artist of the Year Finalists include Mark Rapp, Dylan Dickerson, and Justine Daniels in Music; Ray McManus, Len Lawson, and Carla Damron in Literary Arts; Michaela Pilar Brown, Kendal Jason, and Lauren Chapman in Visual Arts; and Hunter Boyle, Robert Harrelson, and Baxter Engle in Theatre. Voting continues until 5 pm on Friday, December 2nd at www.JasperProject.org.
Contestants in the 2016 Holiday Lip Sync Battle include Billy Guess, Scott Hall, Jenny Mae Hill, Deborah Adedokun, Michaela Krajewski, Kendrick Marion, Abigail McNeely, Wade Sellers, Tony Talent, Ros Graverson, Catherine Hunsinger, and Darion McCloud. Judges are Joelle Ryan-Cook, Katie Fox, and Will Green. The emcee for the night is Terrance Henderson.
While audience members will select the People’s Choice award with their votes ($1 per token), judges will choose their top three contestants, each of whom will lip sync to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You,” which will determine the Grand Champion. Proceeds from vote token and ornament sales benefit The Jasper Project which brings the community such endeavors as Jasper Magazine, 2nd Act Film Festival, Fall Lines literary magazine, as well as a variety of singular and multi-disciplinary arts projects.
