Michael McGuirt will see his abstract art on stage Friday (March 24) as he hears Grammy winning Third Coast Percussion perform at the University of South Carolina School of Music Recital Hall. “Percussion Beat Down” is the finale in this year’s Southern Exposure series.
In addition to the two pieces that will be shown on stage during the performance, more of McGuirt’s abstract works will be on view in the adjacent USC School of Music Library.
“I listened to Third Coast’s music while I painted,” McGuirt said. When the pieces were complete, the percussion ensemble selected which of the works in the series would share the stage during their Columbia performance.” The Chicago-based musicians chose ‘Seed of Knowledge’ for the poster promoting this Columbia concert.
McGuirt said this art-music effort was underway “before they won their Grammy in February for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble. To have my art on stage as this Grammy-winning ensemble performs here in Columbia is very exciting.”
Comprising the ensemble are Glenn Kotche, Augusta Read Thomas, Steve Reich, and Donnacha Dennehy. They will play new work by Princeton composer Donnacha Dennehy, and Steve Reich’s iconic Mallet Quartet.
The art-music juxtaposition was arranged by Sara Winstead; both Winstead and McGuirt are affiliated with Trenholm Art Guild (TAG.)
