Did you know that strokes kill almost 130,000 people per year in the United States? Or that South Carolina has one of the highest stroke death rates in the country? Accomplished neurologist and SmartState Endowed Chair Dr. Souvik Sen has made it his life’s work to research stroke risks, prevention and treatment and he’ll be at EngenuitySC’s popular Science Café series on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, 6-7:30 p.m.
at Speakeasy in Five Points to answer Columbia’s questions.
Long dedicated to the Midlands health community, Dr. Sen, MD, MS, MPH, is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and serves as the Center of Economic Excellence Stroke Chair at the University of South Carolina. In 2011 at Columbia’s Palmetto Health medical system, Dr. Sen established the first Joint Commission-certified stroke center in the Midlands a highly respected accrediting body whose certifications recognize the gold standard in stroke care providers.
Dr. Sen’s research focuses on understanding stroke risk factors and developing clinical-epidemiological methods to test new approaches to stroke treatment and prevention. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, and has held previous positions at renowned organizations like American College of Cardiology, University of North Carolina Stroke Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital and more. Dr. Sen has published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and his research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. These professorships in turn serve as the nucleus for unique, university-based research centers which cultivate critical, public-private industrial partnerships, expand the state’s knowledge base, create well-paying jobs, and enhance economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for the people of South Carolina.
