Midlands Technical College launches Early College program

High school students can now use Lottery Tuition Assistance toward college courses at MTC

Columbia, SC… In Fall 2014, Midlands Technical College (MTC) will launch its Early College program, which will allow high school juniors and seniors to take college classes at MTC before graduating from high school.

The Early College program was successfully piloted last year with Airport High School, and now for the first time, students from all area high schools will be able to use SC Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) funding to help offset the cost of their tuition at MTC. Students must take at least two MTC courses (six credit hours) a semester and be SC residents to be eligible for LTA.

Credits earned through the Early College program may be applied toward high school and college graduation, upon permission by the student’s high school, and these courses can be transferred to other colleges and universities.

Upon successful course placement, Early College students may take academic credit courses on any of MTC’s six campuses. Students must meet all course pre-requisite requirements.

“Early College allows students to gain early exposure to a college atmosphere,” said Sandi Oliver, MTC Vice President for Student Development Services. “This not only helps students once they transition out of high school and onto higher education, but it can also provide an enriched experience for them while in high school.”

Early College is ideal for high school students who want to take at least two MTC courses (or six credit hours) during a semester with the option to use LTA. Non-SC residents and students enrolling in less than six credit hours may continue to participate in dual enrollment courses, but they would not qualify for LTA funds.

High school or homeschooled juniors or seniors are eligible to enroll at MTC for Early College. Students who desire to participate in the Early College program will complete an admissions packet that includes parental and school administrator permission. Early College students are responsible for the cost of their tuition not covered by LTA funds and for their books and supplies.
