Mayor Benjamin Announced the Effort for 100% Clean Energy

On Wednesday morning, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin held a press conference at Half-Moon Outfitters on Devine St. to announce a new effort to engage and recruit mayors to endorse a goal of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy in cities across the country. Mayor Benjamin is one of 26 mayors from across the United States who has joined with the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 campaign. Ahead of the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting in Miami Beach in June, the launch of Mayors for 100% Clean Energy aims to demonstrate bold local leadership and showcase the depth and breadth of support from city leaders for a transition to 100 percent renewable energy.

During the press conference, Mayor Steve Benjamin stated, “I’m honored to join with the Mayor of Miami Beach, Mayor of San Diego, and Mayor of Salt Lake City along with over 2 dozen Mayors from across the country to sign up in support of our resolution that will be presented at the U.S. Conference of Mayors at Miami Beach to make a commitment to take our City’s to 100% clean renewable energy. 64 Mayors are signed up for this initiative and all the Mayors will work together along with the environmental leaders to set a goal and achieve the goal here locally.”

“This commitment is something that we do not take lightly,” Benjamin added. “We have made great strides in our energy efforts over the last few years thanks to our awesome City staff and to the men and women who serve as volunteers all throughout this community.”

Mayor Benjamin thanked the national and local Sierra Club for working diligently with making our City’s 100% Clean Renewable Energy.
