Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Run Flame of Hope to kick off Summer Games

Columbia, S.C. (April 21, 2016) – The 2016 State Summer Games Opening Ceremonies and other athletic events will be held May 6-8 at Fort Jackson in Columbia. This event will bring together 1400 athletes, 250 coaches and hundreds of families, caregivers and volunteers. Athletes compete at various levels in eight sports; Aquatics, Badminton, Bocce, Bowling, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Track and Field, Softball and Young Athletes. This is the 48th year that Fort Jackson has hosted Opening Ceremonies and events.2014 SC Special Olympics - IMG_9330

Beginning Friday, May 6, Summer Games will kick off with athlete and family registration. Opening Ceremonies begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Solomon Center and will include the Parade of Athletes, lighting of the cauldron and live entertainment by the Army Rock Band and the Clay Brown & Legends Band from Darlington. The following day, Saturday, May 7, aquatics, bocce, bowling, powerlifting and softball will be held at various facilities on Fort Jackson. Gymnastics will be held at All-Star Gymnastics and badminton, Track and field and Young Athletes will be held at Blythewood High School. Saturday will end with Closing Ceremony and the Victory Dance, both held at the Solomon Center on Fort Jackson. Awards will be held throughout the day at each sport venue.

Special Olympics South Carolina provides year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Saturday, May 7:

8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Track and Field, Blythewood High School
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Bowling, Century Lanes/Ivy Lanes, Fort Jackson
8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Masters Bocce, Hilton Parade Field, Fort Jackson
8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Softball, Hilton Field, Fort Jackson
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Badminton, Blythewood High School
9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Aquatics, Knight Pool, Fort Jackson
9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Powerlifting, Vanguard Gym, Fort Jackson
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Gymnastics, All Star Gymnastics, Irmo
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Young Athletes, Blythewood High School
7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Victory Celebration/Dance, Solomon Center, Fort Jackson
