Lake Murray fifth-graders ‘shine’ by giving

LEXINGTON, S.C. — Fifth-grade teachers at Lake Murray Elementary sent out an all-hands-on-deck call to students and parents asking for donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. In return, they received a generous response from the school’s fifth-grade families.

In harmony with lessons about “shining brightest” for the benefit of others, LMES teachers discussed empathy, compassion and the importance of giving back to others and those outside the immediate community. They asked fifth-graders to practice what they learned by collecting donations.

Teachers filled three cars with donations students brought to school during the week of September 5. After school on September 8, fifth-grade teachers organized items for delivery to a local drop-off location intended for Hurricane Harvey victims.
