How Job Seekers Can Use the Holidays to Their Advantage

If you’re a job seeker, ’tis the season to stand out! While the competition may be taking a break, Richland Library’s Business, Careers and Research Center staff say the holiday season is a prime opportunity to network and market yourself.

Here are a few ways that you can use this time of year to your advantage:

  • Be visible: When you’re attending holiday parties and other gatherings, let people know that you are excited about looking for new opportunities where you can use your great skills and abilities to benefit a company or organization.
  • Send cards: Use e-cards as an easy way to connect or reconnect with your network. In addition to wishing your friends a good holiday, you can update them that your job search is going well, but you’re still looking for a position that uses your talents.
  • Get into the holiday spirit: Be generous with your time and do something nice for someone else, such as cooking for an elderly neighbor or volunteering at a soup kitchen. It strengthens your connections with others, one of the fastest ways to a new opportunity.

If you would like to put your skills to the test, join us from 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday, December 14 at Richland Library Main (1431 Assembly Street) for Career Encore! The monthly group meets and shares the challenges of looking for employment with others.

Hopefully, with a little encouragement, you are able to move closer to gifting yourself a new job this holiday season.
