Free Programs to Focus on Women’s Health at Richland Library

Columbia, SC– As part of the 18th annual Women’s Health Week from May 14 – 20, Richland Library is offering an array of programs with the goal of empowering women.

With the help of multiple community partners, there are daily opportunities for ladies to focus on their well-being and to put themselves first. Please join us for the following events:

Self-Defense Class
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Monday, May 15
Richland Library Southeast

This is a crime-prevention program with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department that utilizes techniques, specifically designed for women, to reduce the likelihood of victimization. It allows women to recognize their strengths and make sound decisions when faced with potentially dangerous situations. Register here.

Sexual Assault Awareness Class
10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Tuesday, May 16
Richland Library Main

This informative presentation with Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands will be an interactive discussion about how to support survivors of sexual violence. 
Active Yoga
1 – 2:15 p.m.
Wednesday, May 17
Richland Library North Main

Expect to expand your range of motion. City Yoga will warm up the body with movements coordinated with breath and then focus on alignment of the muscles and bones to create classic yoga postures.

Gentle Yoga
2:30 – 3:45 p.m.
Wednesday, May 17
Richland Library North Main

Relax your body and expand your mind. This session will invite you to move gently with your body. Finding support from the floor, chair or wall, City Yoga will use good alignment to release tension and create comfort, so the breath moves more freely. 
Depression & Anxiety Class
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 17
Richland Library Main

Learn the facts about depression and anxiety in women from the University of South Carolina’s Psychology Services Center. Be aware of what signs to look for in yourself or family members as well as how it affects you physically, mentally and emotionally. Go over tips on what you can do to help manage it and when you should seek medical attention.

Tai Chi
12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Friday, May 19
Richland Library Main

Join Get Bent Massage & Stretching to help promote stress reduction and anxiety. The movement will also improve flexibility and balance.

According to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, close to 15% of women, ages 18 and older, are considered in fair or poor health.
