Spirit Communications Park hosts the Fort Jackson Centennial Celebration presented by Amazon, on Friday when the Columbia Fireflies host the Augusta GreenJackets (San Francisco Giants) at 7:05 p.m. The Fireflies will honor Fort Jackson’s soldiers by providing 2,000 tickets for basic training soldiers and permanent party soldiers, as well as their families.
“The Fireflies are proud to host Fort Jackson’s Centennial Celebration,” said team president, John Katz. “It’s a great chance for the brave men and women that are preparing to serve our Nation to have a night at the ballpark, and a chance for the dedicated staff at Fort Jackson to be recognized for all the hard work that they do preparing soldiers for military service. It is an honor to call our great city home to the largest US Army Training Center in the country.”
There will be two main components of the pregame ceremony. Commanding General of Fort Jackson, Brigadier General John “Pete” Johnson, will throw out the first pitch. Then the Fort Jackson Band and Honor Guard, which performed on Opening Day (April 14), will play America the Beautiful followed by the National Anthem.
Fireflies players will sport their camouflage jerseys and they will be auctioned off – at the ballpark and online – during the game, with proceeds benefitting the USO of South Carolina, an organization that helps soldiers connect to family, home and country while here in Columbia and at Fort Jackson. Members of the community with a valid military ID will receive $2 off a Palmetto Citizens FCU All-Star or Reserved ticket to Friday night’s game, based on availability.
That’s not all that’s happening on Friday night. It’s another Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina #LiveFearlessSC Friday, there will be postgame fireworks and the ZOOperstars return to Spirit Communications Park. In addition, the Fireflies will host Food Drive Friday, where fans presenting two cans of non-perishable food items will receive Buy One, Get One Free tickets. All donations will help Harvest Hope Food Bank restock their pantry to help feed people here in our community.
