Opening Reception: August 3- 6pm- 9pm

Join us for the opening reception for The Great Barrier. A visual metaphor highlighting the destructive results of man’s waste, consumption, and disregard of nature. Having researched the egregious Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Artist in Residence Flavia Lovatelli discovered that the cumulation of plastic, condensed into a naturally forming swirl from converging currents, had been conservatively measured as a size larger than the state of Texas. Deeply disturbed by this fact, Lovatelli was motivated to ignite several community-based recycling projects aimed at reclaiming material and redefining the meaning of trash. Her latest project, The Great Barrier, is a 46-foot-long barrier reef constructed from cups, plastic bags, and other detritus collected during her three month residency.
