Battalion Chief William Strohecker and Chief Wilfred Roach of the Columbia Fire Department received Patriot Awards Monday.
Eli Wishart, state chair for the South Carolina Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR), presented the awards in recognition of extraordinary support of their employees serving in the South Carolina National Guard. Strohecker and Roach were nominated for being highly supportive by their employees and SC Army Guard members Sergeant Kenneth Owens and Specialist Eduardo Ramirez.
The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve.
“Supportive employers like Chief Strohecker and Chief Roach are vital to the success of our mission and the defense of this nation,” said Wishart. “Our Guard and Reserve members could not perform their military duty without knowing their civilian employer supports them 100 percent.”
Both Chief Roach and Chief Strohecker were honored to receive this award and to be nominated by members of the Columbia who not only serve their local communities as firefighters but who serve their Country as Military Service Members.
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
