Columbia to host World Famous Hip Hop Family Day in April

Coming off the heels of a show-stopping performance at Columbia’s Music Farm this weekend with rap icon Slick Rick, South Carolina’s godfather of hip-hop FatRat Da Czar announces the date for 2018’s World Famous Hip Hop Family Day.

Hitting Columbia’s Main Street the second weekend in April, this year’s 3-day event will culminate in a family-friendly hip-hop festival from 11 to 6 PM on Saturday, April 14. With upwards of 12,000 attendees, Hip-Hop Family Day will feature the culture’s four primary pillars: MCs, DJs, b-boys, and graffiti.

“Hip-hop has been bubbling under the surface in Columbia for a long time,” explains Czar. “But this is the year it takes over the city. Local independent hip-hop artists are more visible than ever and even major festivals like Famously Hot New Year are inviting South Carolina’s own to grace the stage. I’ve been waiting my whole career to tip the scales. I’ve dedicated my life’s work to getting us to this point and I’m optimistic that the time has finally come.”

After dedicating the last half-decade to grooming and shaping Columbia’s next generation of hip-hop—local acts such as LaLisa, Grand Royal, ColorBlind, New Success Culture, H3RO, and Cole Connor—to ensure and secure the future of the genre in the city, Czar is preparing to make his mark on a larger scale in 2018.

“The insurance has been paid, and now I’ve turned my attention to launching out,” says Czar. “I wasn’t the first to start this wave, but I predict this is the year that wave will put the city of Columbia on the map.”

Love, Peace & Hip-Hop, a free annual family music festival, is one of Columbia’s largest music events. Since 2013, the event has delivered legendary hip-hop performers such as Kool Moe Dee, Monie Love, Slick Rick, KRS-One, and more. The purpose of the event is to ensure that hip-hop, represented properly, can be the medium through which all ages and races can come together for a day of peace, love, unity and having fun – all to support our community.

Serving as the title sponsor for World Famous Hip Hop Family Day, WellCare’s state president for South Carolina Kathy Warner states: “We are honored to be the title sponsor of Hip-Hop Family Day, whose mission is to have the community come together for a day of peace and unity, which aligns with WellCare’s drive to support the health and well-being of our members, their families and communities at large.”

As South Carolina’s godfather of hip-hop, FatRat Da Czar’s music career has spanned over two decades. In addition to opening for national acts to include Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Lauryn Hill, Czar has also engineered sessions for national artists ranging from KRS-One to Kevin Gates at the Boom Room, the hip-hop focused enclave of South Carolina’s legendary Jam Room Recording Studio. Through his role as founder and executive director of Love, Peace & Hip-Hop, Czar established World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day in 2013.
