Westray joins the Noel Freidline Trio for popular concert series

Friday, November 20, 2015 | 7:00 p.m.

Columbia, SC – The Columbia Museum of Art’s next concert in the CMA Jazz on Main series features special a guest, trombonist Ron Westray. Westray, a native of Columbia, joins Artistic Director Noel Freidline and his trio for one unforgettable performance on Friday, November 20. Westray is best known for his work as lead trombonist with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has appeared in concert with legendary artists such as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, and more. In 2009, Westray was named the Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance at York University, Toronto.

“We are so pleased to be able to bring Ron Westray back to his hometown of Columbia,” says Freidline. “It has been a number of years since Ron has performed in locally and I am tickled to death that we have a venue and series such as Jazz on Main to bring him back and feature his immense talent in front of a hometown audience.  It is definitely going to be a great show.”

Based out of Charlotte, N.C., Noel Freidline and his band have opened for many jazz legends, from Dave Brubeck to Rosemary Clooney. His repertoire brings out the best of every subgenre of the jazz world, including the swing, show tunes, and everything from soulful and edgy reinterpretations of Patti Page to Africanized arrangements of Simon & Garfunkel. The Noel Freidline Trio’s sound is characterized by sophisticated arrangements that always retain a playful element of spontaneity.
