City Park Rangers to Host Lantern Parade, History Walks

The City of Columbia’s Parks Rangers will host a variety of activities to encourage the public to explore the outdoors and celebrate the first day of winter during the month of December.

Both youth and adults can participate in the following free activities sponsored by the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department:

Canal Lantern Tour | Tuesday, December 12 | 6-7 pm

Learn about the historic Columbia Canal on this ranger-guided evening walk. Dress for the forecast and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at the south end of Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street.

Canal History Tour | Sunday, December 10 | 1-2:30 pm

Join the rangers for a guided tour along the historic Columbia Canal and learn how it played a part in Columbia’s growth for almost 200 years. We’ll discuss the original canal, Columbia’s Waterworks, the earliest hydropower plants, and the SC State Penitentiary (CCI).

Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at the south end of Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street.

Nature Walk | Saturday, December 16 | 2-3 pm

Walk along the lighted pathways with a Ranger to learn about our winter residents and how wildlife adapts to winter.  Dress for the forecast and wear good walking shoes.

Meet at the north end of Riverfront Park, 4122 River Drive.

Winter Solstice Lantern Parade and Celebration | Thursday, December 21 | 5-8 pm

Join the City’s Park Rangers for a Winter Solstice Celebration. Rangers will hold a lantern parade at sunset (5:19) from the Red Schoolhouse, across the Columbia Canal and into the brick amphitheater.  Mingle with the Park Rangers, sip hot cocoa and warm your hands over a warm fire.

Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at the south end of Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street.

Last Day Leg Stretch | Sunday, December 31 | 1-2:30 pm

Admire the views and learn about Riverfront Park’s rich natural history on this New Year’s Eve walk.

Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at the south end of Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street.

Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably, bring binoculars and field guides as well as any essentials like water, sunscreen, insect repellent and sturdy walking footwear.
