COLUMBIA, S.C. (December 1, 2015)—Celebrate the holidays with Historic Columbia this season during our many events in December. Some of the programs are new, such as the Holiday Happy Hour, and some, including the Historic Holiday Tours, Candlelight Tours & Carriage Rides and Breakfast with Santa, have become beloved traditions for friends and family. Ongoing through Jan. 3
The holiday season is nearly upon us, and Historic Columbia is pulling out all the stops. View a variety of holiday decorations and traditions in the Robert Mills House and Hampton-Preston Mansion. Guides will provide stories of holidays past in Columbia and discuss how families decorated and entertained during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Free for HC members / $8 adults / $5 youth.
Wednesday, Dec. 2 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Equally at home with solo, chamber, and concerto performances, Solomon Eichner has established himself as an exciting, versatile young artist. This is a rare chance to see this rising star in an intimate concert setting. Proceeds benefit the Columbia Jewish Heritage Initiative. $75 / $50 for YAD or Palladium Society members. Friday, Dec. 4 | 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Celebrate Christmas this year, Victorian-style. Visit HC’s decorated historic house museums for the holidays, create Victorian decorations for your own home, and enjoy a traditional Victorian Christmas tale—a ghost story! All homeschool students are invited to participate in Historic Columbia’s Homeschool Friday programs. Each month’s program includes hands-on activities while students learn and explore different themes and historic sites. Homeschool Fridays programs are designed for students of elementary and middle school age levels.
Reservations are suggested. $5 HC member youth / $6 non-members / $8 at the door / Accompanying adult free.
Friday, Dec. 11 | 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
One Part Happy Hour, Two Parts History. Celebrate the season with Historic Columbia’s Holiday Happy Hour! Come dressed in festive attire (and thinking cap) for Holiday Trivia and a Christmas carol guessing game. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Seasonal cocktails, such as hot toddies and eggnog, will be served, with beer and wine also available. Light appetizers will be on hand, but more importantly participants can share food with others in need. To spread the holiday cheer, there will be a collection for Harvest Hope food donations. Event admission: $15 HC members / $20 non-members, appetizers and drinks included.
Saturday, Dec. 12 | 1:00 p.m.
Tour two historic houses and learn how families in Columbia celebrated the holidays throughout the 19th century. A Victorian Santa Claus will visit with children and listen to those holiday gift requests! Scouts can also make a holiday craft and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Sunday, Dec. 13 | 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
A celebration of the 100th anniversary of Five Points! What began as a trolley hub for Columbia’s first planned suburban neighborhood has evolved into one of the city’s centers of entertainment. This guided tour highlights the history and architecture of the historic district and how it transformed into the “famously hot” spot it is today. Free for HC members / $8 adult & $5 youth non-members / Kids 5 & under free.
Thursday, Dec. 17 | 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Enter the world of Charles Dickens and his famous A Christmas Carol as we learn about Victorian Christmas traditions! Make an ornament, sing some carols, and listen to a story, just like Victorian children traditionally did on Christmas Eve during the late 19th Century. Our Early Adventures program introduces children from ages 3-5 to history through games, crafts and stories in monthly one-hour events. Reservations are suggested. Friday, Dec. 18 | 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Visit the decorated halls of our historic house museums on a guided candlelight tour. Enjoy musical entertainment and children’s activities while celebrating the holidays with Historic Columbia. Before or after your house tour, enjoy a carriage ride through the Robert Mills historic district. Stop by the Gift Shop’s holiday open house throughout the evening for a last minute storewide sale as well as refreshments, holiday tunes, and giveaways. Free for HC members. Non-members: $12 adults / $8 youth. Carriages Rides: $5 per person.
[There is limited space on the carriage rides and guests are strongly encouraged to make reservations in advance. Remaining seats for the carriages rides will be sold on a first come basis at the event.]
Saturday, Dec. 19 | 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Join HC for a holiday treat to remember! Enjoy a continental breakfast in our cozy Carriage House while listening to seasonal music. After your meal, view the decorated halls of the Hampton-Preston Mansion, see a Victorian Christmas tree, make a holiday craft to take home, and don’t forget to take a picture with our Victorian Santa Claus! While Santa is hard at work gathering lists, the Gift Shop elves will also be hard at work providing great values on purchases. Enjoy shopping and activities throughout the day during our storewide sale. HC members: $12 adults / $5 youth. Non-members: $15 adults / $ $7 youth. Kids 3 & under are free.
Sunday, Dec. 20 | 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Residents of Richland and Lexington Counties are invited to take a guided tour of one of our historic house museums for just $1! This month visit the Woodrow Wilson Family Home and experience the nation’s only museum dedicated to Reconstruction. General admission prices apply for any house tours after the first. Walk-ins welcome! Purchase admission and meet for tours at the Gift Shop at Robert Mills. Sunday tours for the Woodrow Wilson Family Home begin at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
