Bringing Stories to Life during Annual Augusta Baker’s Dozen Celebration

Columbia, SC– Each spring, the worlds of storytelling and children’s literature fuse to captivate local audiences. As Augusta Baker’s Dozen: A Celebration of Stories enters its 31st year, Richland Library is excited to welcome acclaimed author and illustrator Jerry Pinkney as the 2017 featured guest.

From April 20-22, there are three opportunities to meet and hear from Pinkney, who has written and illustrated more than 100 books for children:

  • 4 – 6 p.m., Thursday, April 20, learn drawing tips and techniques during the program, Illustrating with Jerry Pinkney, at our Main location (1431 Assembly Street). Register here.
  • 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Friday, April 21, join us for a reception, author discussion and book signing during the program, An Evening with Jerry Pinkney, at our Sandhills location (763 Fashion Drive).
  • 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22, bring the entire family and enjoy a morning of storytelling, music and theater performances with Jerry Pinkney during the program, A Celebration of Stories, at our North Main location (5306 North Main Street).

All three events are free and open to the public.

Augusta Baker’s Dozen honors the life and work of nationally-known librarian and storyteller Augusta Baker. She captured and conveyed the melody and power of the written word, establishing herself as America’s First Lady of traditional storytelling. Her inspiration has enabled generations of storytellers to introduce children to the magic of books and stories.
