American Cancer Society and the University of South Carolina Save More Lives From Cancer through Annual Relay For Life Event

On April 7th, 2017, thousands of USC Students and members of the Gamecock community will join together at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of the University of South Carolina on Blatt Fields to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. The event starts at 5:00 PM with special recognition for cancer survivors at 7:00 PM and activities and entertainment will be ongoing throughout the 12-hour event. The event is held by a student-led organization, Colleges Against Cancer, in partnership with the American Cancer Society. This year, the theme that volunteers and participants have chosen is “Press Play For Relay” and will be incorporated through teams’ campsites and fundraising efforts.

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, we celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Society has invested more than $4.3 billion in research since 1946, and have funded more than 20,000 scientists at more than 1,000 institutions nationwide.

Senior at the University of South Carolina and Spirit Chair for Colleges Against Cancer Executive Board, Stephanie Pacheco, comments on the effect of Relay For Life in her life, “Relay has given me hope that a world with more birthdays and without cancer is right around the corner.”

In addition to the support of the community, the 2017 event is also supported by many businesses and organizations. This year’s sponsors include: Alpha Chi Omega, Advisors Mortgage Group, Buffalo Soldiers, Chapin Land, Coca-Cola, Dave & Busters, Hayden Media, House of Raeford, Palmetto Weekend, PDQ, Process. A Hair Salon, Peter T. Roselle, USC RHA, WISTV, and Ernst & Young.
