Columbia, SC– As temperatures take a nosedive across the Midlands, it’s the perfect time for local residents to partake in Richland Library’s Hygge for the Holidays. So, what is hygge (hoo-gah)? The Nordic tradition refers to a feeling of coziness and comfort.
Well, our staff did some brainstorming about this popular trend, and they have created plenty of ways to help folks create a warm, inviting atmosphere with an emphasis on enjoyment, relaxation and the companionship of others.
Nothing says hygge better than curling up and reveling in some books, music and movies. There are lots of options currently on display tables at Richland Library locations, and if you’re looking for something in particular, ask our staff for recommendations.
Do you need something more interactive? There are dozens of hygge-related programs available, free of charge. Try your hand at paper piece quilting, make a peppermint lotion bar or study the fermentation basics of sauerkraut. Click here for a full list of programs.
Lastly, don’t forget to hygge your workspace, making it your own. Our staff offer up the following tips:
- Declutter and simplify
- Bring comforting things from home (warm socks; cozy blanket; slippers; oversized sweater)
- Make it your sanctuary (candles; lamps; hot tea; coffee; home-cooked meal)
- Bring in nature (natural textures; air purifying plants; ceramics)
Take these ideas and slow down this holiday season, surrounding yourself with people and things that bring you happiness and joy.
